WHAT IS A PREFERRED DRUG LIST?

A Preferred Drug list is a list of drugs selected for coverage based on safety and efficacy as well as the lower cost to the member and the plan sponsor. The list includes brand name and generic products.

WHY ARE GENERIC DRUGS USED?

Generic drugs are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are safe and effective substitutes for most brand name drugs. In most cases, generic drugs offer cost savings to the plan and the member.

DO ALL DRUGS HAVE GENERIC EQUIVALENTS?

No. Only the drugs with expired patents have generic equivalents.

HOW IS A DRUG SELECTED TO BE ON THE PREFERRED DRUG LIST?

The decision is made by a committee of physicians and pharmacists based on therapeutic guidelines and patient experience.

WHY DOES THE PREFERRED DRUG LIST KEEP CHANGING?

As new drug products and improved guidelines become available, it is necessary to update the list. The list will always be a work in progress.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO IF MY DRUG IS NOT ON THE PREFERRED DRUG LIST?

Discuss the therapeutic alternatives with your physician. Your physician may choose to change your medication to one that is on the Preferred Drug list.
